Caroline Phillips Gammell of Atlanta died Thursday at the age of 89. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina she moved to Atlanta during elementary school and graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1944. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology from Georgia State College for Women in 1948 and married James Lovick Gammell on August 20, 1949. She worked in the laboratory at Georgia State Health Department until the birth of her first child. After her three children were in school, Caroline went to work at Sears where she remained until her retirement in 1987. Caroline is pre-deceased by her husband Jimmy. She is survived by a daughter, Louise Gammell Iconis and her husband Kevin; two sons, William Walter Gammell and his wife Dianne, and Phillip Julian Gammell and his wife Vivian; three grandsons, Michael Allen Iconis and his wife Cathy; Christopher Edward Iconis and his wife Catlin; and Blake James Gammell and his wife Allyson; one granddaughter, Briley Lynn Gammell; three great-granddaughters, Isabelle Lynn Iconis, Sophie Capri Iconis, and Aria Marie Iconis; and two great-grandsons, Gabriel Michael Gammell and Lucas Wilson Gammell. Memorial Service will be held Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at A. S. Turner Chapel with Father Nathan D. Hilkert officiating. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Lutheran World Relief or the Alzheimer's Association. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 5 until 7 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
