Carolyn Henry Cook Elrod was born on August 15, 1928, in Sparta, Georgia, the beloved daughter of Henry and Gertrude Cook. Carolyn grew up with her older sister, Irene, and her twin sister, Catherine. A proud graduate of Brenau University, Carolyn earned her bachelor's degree in political science. It was during her college years that she met World War II veteran John Espy Elrod. They married in 1952 and built a life together in the Atlanta area, where they raised three children: Cathy, Chris, and Kevin.
Carolyn lived a life grounded in faith, compassion, and creativity. A devout Christian, she dedicated more than 30 years to teaching children's Sunday School at her Presbyterian church. She found joy in creating with her hands-especially through sewing.
If one word could capture Carolyn's essence, it would be Love. Her life was a testament to kindness, grace, faith, and strength.
She is survived by her sons, John Columbus "Chris" Elrod and Kevin Scott Elrod; her grandchildren, Christian Reid, Cody Reid, and Holland Reid; and her great-granddaughter, Violet Reid. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Elrod; her daughter, Cathy Elrod Reid; and her sisters, Irene Carne and Catherine Cook.
A celebration of Carolyn's life will be held at A.S. Turner and Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA 30033. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the service at 12:30 p.m. Interment will take place at Mellwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain.
In honor of Carolyn's bright and loving spirit, the family kindly requests that guests wear bright, cheerful colors to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Global Village Project at www.globalvillageproject.org.
