Carolyn Kennedy Jones, 81 of Athens, Georgia entered into eternal rest in heaven on May 21, 2015.
Her funeral service will be held on Monday, May 25, 2015 at 11 AM at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, Georgia 30033 with a private burial following at Decatur Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held that morning from 9-10:30 AM prior to the service at Turner's.
Carolyn was born on May 27, 1933 in Augusta, Georgia, daughter of the late Albert Kennedy and Hattie Eubanks Kennedy. She graduated from Tubman High School and came to Atlanta in 1950, where she attended Georgia State University before marrying Richard Kelly Jones on December 28, 1952. She lived in Atlanta, Avondale Estates, Overland Park, Kansas and Decatur much of her adult life and later in Toccoa, Albany, and Hartwell, Georgia before recently moving to the Silverleaf Alzheimer Care in Athens. She spent much of her life as a loving wife, homemaker and mother of three boys before returning to work at McCurdy and Candler Law Firm. She was a faithful church goer and member of numerous Southern Baptist Churches, including First Baptist Church of Avondale Estates, First Baptist Church of Toccoa and First Baptist Church of Hartwell; and was actively involved with numerous volunteer and service work, including teaching Sunday School, working at Vacation Bible School, working for Meals on Wheels and the Toccoa Food Bank and knitting hundreds of stocking caps for Samaritan's Purse and other charities. Carolyn was an avid and accomplished knitter and member of the Atlanta Knitters Guild. She was a lifelong baseball fan and an enthusiastic fan of the Atlanta Braves. She also loved telling a good yarn and would entertain with a story whenever she could. She was beloved by her grandchildren and enjoyed her time with them.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard Kelly Jones; her sister, Kathryn Kennedy Ogletree and brother, Albert Kennedy, Jr.; and her niece Patricia Ogletree Edgington, along with brother's in-law, Harvey Ogletree, Howard Ogletree and Lawrence Brown.
Survivors include her sister June Kennedy Brown of Atlanta; her three boys, Richard Kennedy Jones and his wife Charlotte of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, David Michael Jones and his wife Stephanie of Carlton, Georgia, and Steven Kelly Jones and his wife Michele of Jacksonville, Florida; her seven grandchildren, Jennifer Thorne and her husband, Rob, Nick Jones and his wife, Yukino, Ryan Jones , Alisa Moody, Austin Moody, Kelly Jones and Sophie Jones; three great-grandchildren, Takuto Jones, Ollie Thorne and Henry Thorne; and her niece Kay Underwood and her husband Jimmy and nephew Ken Ogletree and his wife Julia.
