Carolyn Newman

November 5, 1942 — February 15, 2012

Carolyn Hull Martin Newman, 69, died February 15, 2012 surrounded by her family after a short illness. She was born on November 5, 1942 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta and grew up in Decatur. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1960 and North Georgia College in 1964 with a degree in Chemistry. Her professional career spanned more than 30 years beginning with an internship at Grady Hospital. She then worked for the VA Hospitals in Decatur and Roanoke, Virginia. Later she worked in the lab at CDC in Atlanta, eventually working for the Center for Environmental Health. She served as an analyst in the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, from which she retired in 2005. Carolyn's intelligence and humor will be remembered and deeply missed by many. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur Thomas Martin and Julia Livingston Hull Martin, and her former husband, Mike Newman. She is survived by her sister, Judy Martin Macolly of Savannah, her niece, Lisa Macolly Joselove of Savannah, her nephew, Mark Macolly of Cumming, several godchildren, nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends. A private internment will be held for the family Friday, February 17th at Historic Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive guests at a reception in celebration and honor of Carolyn's life from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, February 17th at Avondale Community Center. Remembrances may be made to The Humane Society, Hospice Atlanta, American Cancer Society, or Historic Oakland Foundation.
