Carter Stocks

May 14, 1930 — December 27, 2021

Carter Stover Stocks left this world peacefully at her Stone Mountain, Georgia home on December 27, 2021, at the age of 91. She was born in Greenville, South Carolina, the daughter of Dakyns and Edith Stover. Carter's father was the town lawyer and a local stage actor in plays, and her mother was the daughter of a civil engineer (John Hunter Leversedge), who specialized in steel construction. Their neighbor in Greenville was a writer for the local paper, and the Stovers were featured frequently in the news of that day.

During WWII, Carter's father served as a military lawyer and was stationed in Atlanta. Her father died suddenly in December 1946. Carter graduated from Christ the King School in Atlanta in 1947, and then went to Furman University. Carter met Francis (Frank) Marion Stocks on a blind date in 1948. They fell in love and married at St. Luke’s Episcopal church on September 2, 1949.

Carter and Frank raised two daughters, Kelly and Sandra. In 1968, Frank opened Major Furniture in Little 5 Points where Carter worked alongside him until Frank left this world in 1992. Major Furniture closed in 1998 and Carter retired from the furniture business and became a landlord. In retirement, Carter enjoyed being involved at St. Michaels and All Angels, knitting, solving crossword puzzles, and playing with her grandsons, Carter and Hunter Peatman. She was a big part of their lives and was always very proud of them.

Carter was loved by many people from all walks of life- from the cream of society in Greenville to the characters in Little 5 Points. She was a feisty, independent, Southern lady admired by all. Her friends and family will miss her more than words can say. Carter is survived by her daughter Kelly Stocks and husband Bob Peatman; daughter Sandra Stocks and husband jeff Thomas; and grandchildren, Carter and Hunter Peatman; sister-in-law, Lilly Stover; and many loving nieces and nephews.
