Catherine Callaway

December 17, 1934 — February 25, 2025

Catherine "Cathy" Lewis Callaway, 90, passed away on February 25, 2025, in Decatur, Georgia. Born on December 17, 1934, in Champaign, Illinois.

Cathy pursued higher education with dedication, earning a Bachelor of Science from Agnes Scott College and later a master's degree in accounting from Georgia State University. Her professional career included roles in human resources at Sears and Roebuck and in revenue collections and accounting for the State of Georgia. However, her most cherished roles were those of a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Cathy was married to Mayson Callaway Jr. for 68 years. Their love story was marked by a secret wedding on December 31, 1955, followed by a public ceremony on June 8, 1957. Together they built a family that brought her immense joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Mayson Callaway Jr., parents; Horace and Mildred Lewis, son; Gene Callaway, and son-in-law; Bill Cutts.

She is survived by her children; Lou Callaway and Gus Callaway "Lisa"; grandchildren; Dr. Mayson Callaway, IV "Erin", Dr. Chrissy Callaway, Elizabeth "Libby" Callaway Schilling "Patrick", Michael "Sully" Callaway "Jessica", Katie Cutts, and Coco Cutts, as well as two great-grandchildren; Daisy and Matilda Callaway.

A passionate supporter of the arts, Cathy especially loved the theatre and opera. She was an enthusiastic patron of the Alliance Theatre and the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Her love for musicals and operas was something she shared with her grandchildren through outings to performances, following trips to The Varsity-memories they will always cherish. Cathy had a unique sense of humor and an appreciation for life's simple pleasures. She was known for enjoying her wine with ice-a personal touch she insisted upon to promote hydration.

A private graveside service for family will be held at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta on March 29, 2025, at 4:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will take place on March 30, 2025, at Holbrook of Decatur from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM; valet parking will be available for guests attending the event.

Cathy's legacy lives through the love she shared with her family and friends and the joy she found in the arts. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Atlanta Humane Society or your favorite charity.
