Cathryn Henry Creasy
August 21, 1929—August 3, 2023
Cathryn Henry Creasy died Wednesday, August 3, at the age of 93. A native of Atlanta, Cathryn was the only child of Robert and Cathryn Block Henry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Scott Creasy, and Lyle Henry Krohn, whom she married after 20 years as a widow.
Cathryn graduated from Sacred Heart School before entering the University of Georgia in Athens. After two and a half years, she returned to Atlanta to care for her dying mother. She completed her bachelor’s degree in business at the Atlanta Division of UGA, now Georgia State University. She was a member of Phi Chi Theta, an honorary business fraternity, and the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.
For 19 years, she worked as administrative assistant in the Engineering and Packaging Departments of Coca Cola USA.
Cathryn believed service to community and others was a vital ingredient of a full life. She was a Girl Scout leader for five years and a Cub Scout Den mother for two. For 10 years, she held several positions with Toney Valley PTA and, in recognition, was awarded an honorary lifetime PTA membership.
In Snellville, she regularly attended Snellville City Council meetings and was never hesitant in voicing her support and disagreement. Always, she was a faithful supporter of the Snellville Police Department and in 2008 was presented a resolution appointing her an honorary captain. She served on the Advisory Council of the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner’s office. She was president and, later, treasurer for the Snellville Senior Keenagers and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2004 and 2008.
Faith, family, and church defined Cathryn. She loved Snellville United Methodist Church and was a member there from 1973 until her death. At Snellville UMC, she served in leadership on several committees, was a member of the Grace Snell Circle and a long-time member and leader of her beloved Hancock Sunday School Class. She shared her faith joyously and served with grace.
Cathryn had an indomitable zest for living that never faded in her retirement years. She flew in a hot-air balloon, enjoyed white-water rafting, and swam with the dolphins. At 75, she rode a Tennessee Walking Horse, parasailed at 79, and went sky-diving at 80 and zip-lining at 81.
Cathryn shared her values, faith, and love with her family. She had an overflowing pride in her children, Kathy, a registered nurse, John, a retired battalion chief with Dekalb County, and Bob and Jim, both retired police officers with the City of Atlanta. She taught her children to serve others and care for one another, qualities she modeled throughout her life, even as Alzheimer’s Disease inflicted its wounds.
In addition to her four children, Cathryn is survived by her son-in-law and daughters-in-law, Mark Westmoreland, Susan Creasy, Glenda Creasy, and Lori Creasy. She was MeMaw to eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, with a fourth due to be born in early August. She was also a loving and joyous presence in the lives of her many nieces and nephews and blessed so many other people with her radiant smile and gracious presence.
