Cathy Mitchell

September 24, 1924 — April 12, 2014

Nancy Catherine Bottoms Mitchell passed away early on April 12, 2014 at the age of 89. Cathy was born in Coal Mountain, Georgia, on a small family farm to George Washington Bottoms and Maud Bottoms on September 24, 1924. She was the loving and devoted wife of Joseph A. Mitchell for 68 years. She is survived by her husband and her brother, Robert Bottoms, of Atlanta. Her only son, Joseph Allan Mitchell, died in December 2013. She will be remembered fondly by her children: Margaret Quinn (Jerry Bunce), Toni Mitchell (Allan's wife), Mary Santiago, and Nancy Poehlmann (Christian), and grandchildren Alison Quinn, Valerie Quinn (Brian Hoffman), Brian Mitchell (Kate), Chris Mitchell (Heather), Kevin Mitchell (Lisa), Joanna Mitchell, David Santiago (Amie), Katie Schultz, Diana Wilson Walters (Marvin), Lesley Woodruff (Ryan), Wolf Poehlmann, and Johann Poehlmann. Great-grandchildren are Molly Mitchell, Helen Santiago, Michael Santiago, Elizabeth Santiago, Connor Wilson, Gianna Wilson, Kali Walters, Hudson Walters, Hannah Woodruff, Colin Woodruff, and Grayson Woodruff. Cathy met Joe Mitchell in the Henry Grady Lounge in Atlanta, and a year later she packed a trunk and took a train to the Army Air Corps base where they were married. Their courtship consisted of love letters exchanged between them found in the attic with a red ribbon around them. After his discharge, Joe went back to college to finish the last semester of his senior year. After a visit to his family in Springfield, MA, Joe and Cathy went back to Atlanta near Cathy's family where Joe completed a year-long training in printing sales. They moved to Winston-Salem, NC with two kids in tow and left for Atlanta again several years later with four children. Joe and Cathy spent the rest of their married life in the Atlanta area. Cathy enjoyed gardening, reading, and creating art. She was quiet in a group and loved one-on-one relationships. She was happiest when she returned to school and attended nearby Agnes Scott College. She grew her hair long and enjoyed the younger students. The visitation will be at A. S. Turner Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 15, 6-8 pm. The funeral mass will be at St. Thomas More Church in Decatur at 11 am on Wednesday, April 16. Burial will be 3 pm. at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens, Cumming GA, with a view of the mountain Cathy saw every day growing up.
