Cathy Smith Harwood

It is with profound grief and sadness that the family of Cathy Smith Harwood announces her death from a long struggle with stomach cancer. She died peacefully on Friday February 3, 2017 being held in the loving hands of her son, her sister, and her best friend. She was 65 years old. Cathy was a native Atlantan born on August 21, 1951. She is predeceased by her grandparents, The Reverend James Arthur Smith , Dora Pass Smith, Winston Crawford and Nola Millican Crawford, and her parents, James Ernest Smith and Ida Crawford Smith. She is survived by her sister, Dr. Sherry McHenry, her daughter Leslie Harwood Johnson (Johnny), her son, Christopher James Harwood (Gretchen Waters), her four grandchildren, Mikayla Harwood, Connor Harwood, Reese Johnson, and Carly Johnson, and cousins and friends.

Cathy was a graduate of Lakeside High School. She attended Georgia Southern College and graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in accounting. She retired in 2013 after a long career of service with the United States Postal Service.

She was a star basketball player in high school, a graceful water skier, a great snow skier, a fierce racquet ball player and a lover of Motown, blackjack and travel. She had an incredible playfulness, wit, and sense of humor, and the most wonderful smile and laugh. She also had the biggest and most loving heart of anyone in the family and was our most caring and generous soul. We will miss her terribly.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 11, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur Georgia.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the service.

A down home lunch to honor our Southern family will be held at the home of her sister at 2:30 p.m.

We thank every single staff member on the fourth floor of the DeKalb Medical Center for their many months of love and caring for Cathy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society to honor Cathy's great love and care of all animals.
