Cdr. Vernon John Cheek

Cmdr. Vernon John Cheek, 99, retired U S Navy Reserve, of Atlanta, died Saturday, September 20, 2008. He was born May 6, 1909 in Canon, GA (HartCounty) and raised in Elberton and Lavonia. He was Chief Communications Officer in the Pacific Theater of WWII aboard the Bunker Hill and Belleau Wood aircraft carriers. In addition, he was a graduate of Georgia Tech in electrical engineering. As an engineer he worked for the Protestant Radio and TelevisionCenter and the Audichron Company in Atlanta, where he helped synchronize the Apollo Moon Landing. A lifelong Methodist, he taught Sunday school for 30 years at BrookhavenUnitedMethodistChurch. Perhaps his proudest accomplishments were his 53 happy years of marriage to his beloved wife, Ruth Born Cheek of Athens, who predeceased him and being the adored father of his two daughters, Sharon Cheek Rodriguez and Anne Cheek Meyer. The greatest joy in his 8th and 9th decades of life was being the grandfather of his treasured only grandchild, Joanna Ruth Meyer.  He is further survived by his sons-in-law, Michael Rodriguez and Charles Meyer, who were more like true sons to Vernon; special nieces and nephews, Melvin and Nadine Cheek, Betty (Cheek) and Bill Spivey and Mickey and Sherry Moon; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved brothers, Jasper, Edwin and Brannon, sisters, Alice and Myrtie and nephew, Arnold. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, September 24th at DecaturCemetery at 3:30 P.M. A memorial service will be held October 5th at ___________at NorthbrookUnitedMethodistChurch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Atlanta Union Mission.  A. S. Turner & Sons.
