Charles Aiken Houston

Dr. Charles Aiken (Chas) Houston, Jr. formerly of Roanoke, Virginia, died December 29, 2020, from COVID-19 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born June 24, 1942, in Lewisburg, Tennessee, to Charles Aiken and Josephine Woodward Houston. His sister Connie Houston (Savannah, Georgia) preceded him in death.
Dr. Houston is survived by his daughter Heather Bligh Houston (Atlanta, Georgia) and daughter Laura Ashley Houston Hardaway (Ben) and grandchildren Lilly Grace, Houston Kathryn, and Eads McBee all of Austin, Texas. He is survived by Linda Knowles Houston, the mother of his children.
Also surviving are his nephew Lisle Houston Engle (Eliza) and their daughter Samantha of Burbank, California, and niece Laurin Engle Gaylord (Jay) and their son Grant Houston and daughter Emmaline Paige of Kennesaw, Georgia.
Dr. Houston was a graduate of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and earned a Masters of Mathematics at UTK and a Ph.D. in Statistics from Virginia Tech. He taught many years at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke before becoming their Director of Institutional Research. He was an adjunct facility member of Mary Baldwin University, Averitt University, Bellarmine University (Kentucky), Hollins University, and University of Virginia School of Nursing. After retiring from VWCC, he taught at The College of Health Sciences, Roanoke.
Chas was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity (Zeta) at UTK. He also was a member of several educational and professional organizations.
Dr. Houston was proud to have been Chairman of the Roanoke County Democratic Party for many years. His company, University Consultants, was active in many state and local campaigns. Dr. Houston was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, Virginia. Chas was an avid tennis player and played in dozens of tournaments.
