Charles Aldine Horton

Charles Aldine Horton, better known as Chuck, died at home in Decatur, Georgia on August 10, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on December 13, 1960 to Evelyn and Richard E. Horton. Chuck had a passion and gift for acting. He earned his BA in speech and theater from Louisiana State University, followed by his Master of Fine Arts in acting from Brandeis University. A well-loved member of the Atlanta theatre community, Chuck acted in shows throughout the city in the 1990s and early 2000s-including at the Alliance Theatre and the Horizon Theatre Company-and was consistently praised for his performances.

Chuck's love for his family shone brightly in everything he did. He was a loving husband to Suzanne for over 32 years, and a doting father to his sons Duncan and Thomas. Alongside his family, he was an active member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church and its Boy Scout Troop 18, two communities that have been deeply impacted by his energy and care through the years.

Chuck served as assistant scoutmaster for Troop 18. He shared his love of nature through the troop's hiking and camping trips, and could always be seen serving at annual pancake breakfasts and barbecue dinners.

At Glenn UMC, he was a dedicated volunteer, serving at Trinity House, on Habitat for Humanity builds, and more. From 2018 to 2021, Chuck gave of his time and talents as director of the annual Glenn Youth play or musical, sharing his excitement and experience with a new generation of budding actors.

Chuck thought deeply and worked hard. He possessed an impressive memory and a dry wit. He loved music, and his family holds countless fond memories of him singing and playing his guitar. His love for his Louisiana roots ran deep, epitomized by his ability to cook the perfect roux, a skill that he passed on to his sons with great pride.

A lifelong United Methodist, Chuck's faith was incredibly important to him. He believed that performing onstage was a powerful way to express the Christ-like traits of justice, mercy, kindness, and humility. He always had a twinkle in his eye that seemed to stem directly from the authentic joy he carried in his heart.

In the face of glioblastoma multiforme, Chuck demonstrated the depth of his faith and courage, inspiring all who knew him with his grace and fortitude in the midst of adversity.

Chuck was predeceased by his parents, Richard E. and Evalyn Horton. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne T. Horton; his sons, Duncan B. Horton and Thomas P. Horton; his siblings, Richard E. Horton, Sharon H. Nason, and Cindy H. Hall; and many dear friends.

A Celebration Service will be held August 19th at 11:00 am at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church (Emory/Decatur).
