Charles Arthur Thompson

January 17, 1924 — October 23, 2011

Charles Arthur Thompson
After battling health issues for several months, Chuck was able to join his sweetheart, Charlotte in heaven on Sunday October 23, 2011. Chuck was born and reared in Youngstown, Ohio on January 17, 1924. Despite growing up during the depression, he had a wonderful childhood, where he was loved and pampered by all. His natural intelligence led to an early graduation from high school after which he enlisted in the US Navy. The Navy put him through MIT, (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) from which he graduated in 1946 with a degree in meteorology. While in the service and home on leave Chuck met and later married his sweetheart, Charlotte. After leaving the Navy Chuck and Charlotte were married in 1949 and Chuck worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube before being recalled by the Navy. The Navy transferred them to Norfolk, VA where Chuck served as a meteorologist, forecasting North Atlantic weather for the fleet. After being released by the Navy, Chuck joined IBM in 1954 where he attended the very first computer class ever taught by IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. During his 32 year career at IBM he moved 7 times and worked on large scale computer installations at Ford, Firestone, Chrysler, Volvo (in Sweden) and finally C&S Bank, and Delta Airlines in Atlanta. By the time they reached Atlanta their children, Lynn and Mark, where school age and the couple decided they were staying in Atlanta. Being an avid golfer, Chuck joined Druid Hills Golf Club where he was a member for over 40 years. He retired from IBM in 1986 and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, spending most of his time golfing, playing cards and traveling. In early 2006, after 56 years of marriage, Chuck's beloved wife and partner Charlotte passed away. Chuck spent the remainder of his life living in a wonderful community called Park Springs, where he enjoyed playing bridge, socializing, playing poker and working on puzzles. He also had an opportunity to do some wonderful traveling with his kids. Chuck is survived by his children, Lynn Burns and Mark Thompson and by his grandchildren, Billy Burns and Amanda Burns Pooser. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday October 25th at A.S. Turner & Sons. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday October 26th at Shallowford Presbyterian Church.
