Charles B. "Chuck" Dickerson, Jr., age 85 of Stone Mountain, GA, passed away peacefully in the comfort of family Tuesday, November 25, 2014 after a brief illness. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather much beloved by his family and friends. He was born in New Haven, CT the son of Eula and Charles B. Dickerson, Sr. and one of six children.
He moved to Atlanta, GA in the 1950's and was employed by Lockheed Aircraft where he met the love of his life whom he soon married, Ila for what became a 58 year love affair. Following 18 years at Lockheed, he worked at Western Electric before settling into a long and satisfying stretch at Eastern Airlines.
He served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Army in South Korea during the Korean War. A few years afterward as part of the Air Force Reserve then later Air National Guard he answered his nation's call during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War with his Air National Guard unit deployed twice to South Vietnam and the Southeast Asia Theater. His devotion to duty and love of country was only surpassed by his deep love for his family and in later life his acceptance of and desire to honor Christ through how he lived.
Charles enjoyed travel, people and most of all helping others. His other "job" as a seasonal employee at the Georgia Tech Athletic Association where he worked all the Georgia Tech home football games and many special events from 1962 – 2010 quickly became a labor of love for him as he developed a loyal affection for the Institute, its values and the alumni, guests and associates he served over those years.
In all aspects of his life, the respect, love and sense of fairness he demonstrated to others was appreciated and often returned by those who encountered him. Though he will be greatly missed, his family and those he touched will always cherish his life, the values it encompassed, his sense of humor (intentional and unintentional), and the fond recollections of one who left everyone's lives a little brighter.
Charles is survived by his wife Ila; daughter Peggy (Carter) Sammon; sons Don (Connie) Dickerson, David (Lynn) Dickerson and Chuck Dickerson; grandchildren Alaina (Owen) Connor, Alicia (Jamie) Horner, Amanda (Jim) Maciejewski, Joshua (Kelly) Dickerson, Michelle (Mike) Mathis, Scott Browne, Danny (Monica) Browne, Jennifer (Eric) Olfano, Brice (Alison) Hope and Brett Hope; great-grandchildren Aila Conner, Aubry Conner, Jadyn Dickerson, Gavin Dickerson, Olivia Maciejewski, Tiffany Mathis, Juliette Olfano, Madison Hope, Tyler Hope, Jackson Hope and Louie Hope; numerous nieces and nephews; sister Geraldine Smith of Tucker, GA and brother F.W.
