Charles L. Harkleroad, 73, of Stone Mountain, Georgia passed away Monday August 12, 2013 after battling kidney cancer for over a decade. Charlie was born in Asheville, NC on August 9, 1940 to Charles William Harkleroad of Bristol, TN and Christine Kidwell Harkleroad of Crossville, TN. The family moved to Atlanta where Charlie attended Brown High School and then graduated from Georgia Military Academy in 1959. His career endeavors included serving as a machinist for Delta Airlines and Southern Railway, working with NAPA Auto Parts, Leggett Motor Rebuilding Company, and most recently at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mr. Harkleroad was an avid rail fan and member of the National Railway Historical Society; he served as Chief Mechanical Officer for the Atlanta Chapter in 1972. Trains were his passion and working on and photographing steam engines became a working hobby. Charlie served as a Deacon at Valley Brook Baptist Church in Decatur. Mr. Harkleroad is survived by wife, Shelia Wilkins Harkleroad and daughter, Susan Harkleroad Hogue, her husband, Chris Hogue, and granddaughter, Elise Hogue of Lilburn; other children include daughters from a previous marriage Kellie Harkleroad Reed of Vancouver, Washington and Kathie Harkleroad Santangelo, deceased. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, at the Valley Brook Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. The church is located at 1198 North Valley Brook Road.
