Charles Richard Shepherd, 93, an Atlanta native died March 29, 2009. He was born February 4, 1916 son of William Clyde Shepherd, Sr. and Mabel Plunkett Shepherd, and was raised on a 21 acre farm located on Lavista when it was still a dirt road. He survived the Great Depression and graduated Boys. During WWII, as a road contractor, he constructed Army bases in Guatemala, the Azores, Saudi Arabia, Tripoli, and local Georgia bases such as Warner Robbins and Moody. After the war, he continued in the family business, Shepherd Construction Company, paving highways throughout the United States and was one of the original contractors to pave the Atlanta beltway I-285. As a long time supporter of GA Tech, he traveled with the football teams of the Bobby Dodd era and remained a diligent supporter of the Athletic Association. His outreach into the community touched all aspects from hosting the hospitality suite at the Democratic Convention for JFK to coaching 5-6 year olds in youth football to helping young people in troubled times stay on the right path. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. He is survived by 2 brothers, J. Harold Shepherd and William Clyde Shepherd, Jr., four Children, Aubrey Shepherd Lunsford, William Clyde Shepherd II, Mary Elizabeth Shepherd, and Charles Robert Shepherd, 10 Grandchildren, and 7 Great Grandchildren. The family will receive friends prior to the service Thursday at 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street. He will be laid to rest beside his parents and eldest son Charles Richard, Jr. at Decatur. He will be dearly missed. Flowers will be accepted.
