Charlotte Lorren Cherry, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully and gracefully surrounded by her family on Friday, March 21st, 2025, at the age of 93. Charlotte was a woman of strong character, a truly loyal friend, and a vibrant presence in the lives of all who knew her. She was the epitome and perfect example of a Southern woman full of unmatched hospitality and charm.
Charlotte was born on July 10th, 1931, in Neuse, North Carolina. She attended David Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. to study home economics, King's Business College in Charlotte, NC. for secretarial training, and completed Special Education courses through the University of Georgia.
After her 2 years at Lipscomb, she moved back to Raleigh to work for Burlington Industries in the cost department. Soon thereafter she met and married the love of her life, Joseph Clyde Cherry. Starting their lives together they moved to Washington, DC. then later Vienna, VA. where she worked for Fannie Mae as a stenographer in Washington, DC. Following an exciting career move with Joe's employer Norfolk Southern Railroad Charlotte, Joe, and their three young children ultimately settled down in Metro Atlanta, GA. Her longest career role was as a Paraprofessional in auditory-services with the Dekalb County School System, where she loved interacting with students and making the children and their families feel comfortable in the audiology department.
Charlotte's greatest treasure in life was her family, nurturing and supporting them with unwavering love. She dedicated her life to family, taking immense joy in all of her granddaughters' activities (ballet, soccer, softball, and swimming to name a few). She was happiest when her home was filled with family, always making sure others were fed, happy, and her loving kindness deeply felt by all.
In her later years, Charlotte enjoyed trips back home to Raleigh, NC, vacationing at Brosnan Forest "The Forest" a timber and wildlife preserve in Dorchester, SC., Caribbean cruises, and traveling abroad to Europe with her friends with the Educational Opportunities Tour Group. She remained quite active as a member of the Norfolk Southern Ladies Club, planning her Millbrook High School class reunions, and served as a dedicated volunteer with the Stone Mountain Visitor's Center, a staple in the community. And as an avid Nicholas Sparks fan, she never missed a chance to read each of his latest books.
Charlotte's love for the Lord guided her every step. As an active member of Northlake Church of Christ, she was involved with care groups and taking care of the homebound. She had a servant's heart, always seeking ways to uplift and nurture others. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love. She had a rare gift for making even the simplest moments feel special, whether it was through a shared meal, a joyful conversation, or the way she made every guest she hosted, even perfect strangers, feel like family.
She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Cherry, sister Mitchie Shaw, and parents Emil Newton and Ruby Lorren. She is survived by her son Richard Cherry, and daughter-in-law Carol Cherry; her daughter Linda Byerley, and son-in-law John Byerley; and daughter Brenda White; her five granddaughters Lauren Trujillo, Heather Cherry, Elizabeth Walters, Lindsay White, and Ashley White; her three great-granddaughters Lexie Buchan, Cheyenne Copeland, and Ensley Copeland, her cherished sisters Clarice Holland and Shirley Daniel, many nieces and nephews, and the countless others whose lives she touched with her boundless love.
Charlotte lived a beautiful life defined by love, faith, and a commitment to serving others. Her legacy is one of love in action. She leaves behind a lifetime of selfless giving, numerous hearts touched by her kindness, and a family forever blessed by the love that she gave. Though her absence leaves an immeasurable void, her love will continue to shine through the lives of those she so dearly loved in Heaven.
