It is with sadness that her family announces the passing of Charlotte Elizabeth Smith Steiner on November 26, 2016. Born in Battle Creek, Michigan on August 1, 1940 to Charles Frederick Smith and Katherine Elizabeth Moore Smith, she spent her childhood in Hastings Michigan. In 1960 Charlotte married and moved to Atlanta, her home until her death. She was active in the Junior League of Atlanta for many years. In the 1970s and 80s, Charlotte and her second husband, Arthur Steiner, enjoyed a successful business in their Buckhead (women's clothing) store, R.A. Lyndon. Many women in Atlanta looked to her to plan and update their wardrobe each season. Charlotte enjoyed baking, gardening, sewing, crafting and a career as an interior designer until her health would no longer allow. Charlotte will be remembered for her classic beauty and fashion, her vibrant personality, her sarcastic sense of humor, and her ability to tell a story better than anyone else. As a teen she developed a passion for ballet and would have pursued professional dance if she had not been stopped by polio. During her young adult years, she sang in a jazz combo, performing at small venues in Atlanta. Her love for jazz and dance continued throughout her life. Although she did not attend college, extensive reading and life lessons gave her knowledge about many topics including her special interests in history and science. Anyone who visited her home would see her beautiful yard that she cared for herself and know she had a truly green thumb. Family history was extremely important to her and generations old family heirlooms will be treasured by her children and grandchildren.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents.
Her younger sister, Martie Smith lives in Little Rock, AR.
Charlotte is survived by her loving partner, husband, and best friend of 28 years, Patrick McFarland. She also leaves behind her children, Amy Morgan, Rebecca Walden, and Adrienne (husband Grant) Hagy of Atlanta, GA; Anne (husband David) Matthews of Rowlett, TX; and Robin Parsons of Georgetown TX. Along with these children by birth, she is survived by Susan Barnett of Atlanta Ga, whom she has loved as a daughter; and step-daughters, Kim McFarland and Kerrie Free. She will be missed by grandchildren Rex Dahlheimer; William, Mary, and James Matthews; Liza and Henry Hagy; and Austin Barnett.
