Cheryl A. Swartz passed away on November 20, 2019 after an aggressive but brief battle with lung cancer. Born on May 3, 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia, Cheryl lived a full and fun-loving life. After graduating from Cross Keys Highschool, Cheryl attended the Dental Hygienist Program at Pensacola Junior College where in 1969 she met Bruce I. Swartz who was assigned to the Naval Communications Training Center in Pensacola, Florida. After graduation, Cheryl and Bruce were married in St. Philip’s Episcopal Cathedral on July 11, 1970. After a 2-week vacation in California, Cheryl accompanied Bruce to his first duty station in Hawaii for the next 3 years. Cheryl and Bruce then moved to Augsburg, Germany where they lived, traveled, and immersed themselves in the European culture traveling as far north as Edzell, Scotland, England, as well as to Italy, France, Austria, and Switzerland. Cheryl loved learning about European culture and history, but most of all, she loved getting to know the people. Cheryl was loved by everyone who met her. When Cheryl returned to the United States with Bruce, she was pregnant with her daughter, Sabine Ann, who was born on Labor Day weekend in 1977. Ironically it was on Labor Day weekend that Cheryl and Bruce met.
Cheryl became an instrumental part of the family business in Sacramento, California. There was never anything she couldn’t do and during the many weeks Bruce would be away from the Sacramento manufacturing plant Cheryl would manage the entire operation on her own.
In 1989 Cheryl, Sabine and Bruce moved back to the east coast where Bruce was called back by the Navy. It was there Cheryl became involved with the Republican Party and stayed active until she passed. In 2006, Cheryl and Bruce purchased a home right across the street from her parents in Brookhaven, Georgia, on the same street she grew up. For the next several years Cheryl was able to be there for her parents and became involved with the Georgia Chapter of the Mighty 8th Historical Society. Malcolm Magid, Cheryl’s father, was a B17 pilot during WWII and was heavily involved in helping with the standing up of the Mighty Eighth AF Historical Museum in Pooler, GA. Cheryl was very proud of her mother and father and was always there for them until they passed.
Cheryl was always a very giving person. Bobbie D. Frantz, Central DeKalb Republican Women President, said it best:
"…We will miss her smile, her enthusiasm for all things Republican, but most of all, her warm and loving friendship.
Cheryl will be greatly missed as a leader as well. She was very active in the Central DeKalb Republican Women's club having served as President for a number of years. Cheryl served recently as GFRW District Director. Cheryl also served as a member of GFRW's Finance Committee and attended many of GFRW's events around the state.”
Cheryl is survived by Bruce Swartz, husband of 49 years and their daughter Sabine Ann (Swartz) Flynn, brothers Kevin, Jonathan Magid, and their families.
