Christine Goumenis

November 11, 1930 — August 6, 2014

Christine Goumenis, age 83 of Atlanta, passed away August 6, 2014 to join her beloved husband; Father Homer P. Goumenis in eternal life. She was born to George and Anastasia Coleman (Carvouniatis), who were Greek immigrants, in Oklahoma City OK. She was a graduate of Central High School in OK. She married Homer Goumenis in 1950 who was soon to be ordained into the Greek Orthodox Priesthood. They spent 12 happy years in Columbia SC and were transferred to Atlanta to minister the Greek Orthodox Church. She developed a love of oil painting at which she excelled. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 39 and was a 45 year survivor. She continued raising her 2 children, Cathy and David while maintaining her philanthropic duties within the church as well as her volunteer work with cancer patients. Christine and Homer also fostered a boy Ted Zorgias whom they loved as their own son. She worked for 10 years at General Electric. Her love of antiques became her passion which led her to open Grandmas Treasures. She thrived in the day to day interaction with the people who visited her shops. She was very artistic as she also loved floral arranging and spent many hours gardening. She retired and spent her relaxing years enjoying her books, her garden, and playing with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister; Helen Chandis. She is survived by her daughter; Catherine (Frank) Day and their children Coleman and Christopher, son; David Goumenis, sister; Sophia Dantes and brother; Dean Coleman. Funeral Services will be held Saturday August 9, 2014 at 12 pm at The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation; burial will follow at Greenwood cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to; the Endowment fund or Annunciation Day School c/o Greek Orthodox Annunciation Cathedral or donate directly to The Rally Foundation to benefit children's cancer research at www.rallyfoundation.org. The family will receive friends Friday August, 8 2014 from 4 pm until 7 pm with a prayer service starting at 5pm at, A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
