Christopher Ira Southmayd, husband of Theresa Suzanne Taylor Southmayd, died May 27, 2014 after a valiant battle with acute leukemia. He was born on May 21, 1964 at Camp Lejeune, NC to Colonel and Mrs. (Elizabeth) Peter B. Southmayd, United States Marine Corps (Ret.). He was preceded in death by his older brother, Peter B. Southmayd II, and his beloved grandparents and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Ira H.S. McMann and Susan Booth McMann.Chris graduated from Camp Lejeune High School in 1982. He attended the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University ultimately graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BA degree in political science. He used to laughingly like to say that he "was on the ten year program" to get his college degree. During this 10 year period he served as a VISTA volunteer for two years, working with a homeless persons' program for the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Moving to Atlanta, Georgia to work for the Ricoh USA, and much to the delight of his parents, he met and married the light of his life, Theresa. Chris and Theresa loved to travel, go to the beach and be entertained by their pet dogs. He also loved his job and was tremendously proud of his work team. While Chris will be sorely missed by many, he will always be a living memory and beacon of happiness and joy for his family. Please, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, the Hospice Unit at Emory Hospital or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Visitation will held on Thursday, May 29th from 6 to 8 P.M at A.S. and Sons Turner & Sons Funeral Home & Crematory
