Christopher Rodney Smith

On January 5,2021 Christopher Rodney Smith died at the age of 59 from complications related to Multiple Systems Atrophy, first diagnosed as Parkinson’s when he was 48 years old.

He was born on October 21, 1963 in Morristown, New Jersey. When he was two years old, his family moved to MS so he always happily considered himself a southerner. After high school, he moved to Atlanta where he began his college studies.

He received a BBA in Economics and International Business at Georgia State University J. Mack Robinson School of Business Administration, an AA in Finance, Oxford College of Emory University, did Postgraduate Studies in finance and accounting at Georgia State University, and studied Stock Market principles, bonds, derivatives, and structured finance transactions at Emory University.

Chris was a Consultant in domestic and international private financial services. His last employment was with a start-up called Global Food Exchange which is thriving today under the leadership of Richard Lackey who once sent a note to Chris, which said the following: I hope you and the family have a great Thanksgiving. Your heart and commitment are incredible, but your friendship is even more treasured. I am thankful for you.

He was married to Carol Hallman Smith for 36 years. During that time, they raised and cherished many dogs together. They were inveterate world travelers. They loved good food, beaches, their cabin and their boat on Lake Nottely. Chris enjoyed cooking and for many years, as long as he could, he cooked Christmas Eve dinner for the Hallman family and anyone else who happened to show up.

His wife, Carol died on February 25, 2020. Chris is survived by his parents, Jane and Rod Smith, his stepmother, Annette Smith, her daughter, Juliet Waldrop, Jane’s Partner, Patricia Brooks, his brother, David Smith and David’s wife, Susan. Carol’s family, Laura Hallman, and her partner, Judy Cornwell, Richard Hallman and his wife Fern Hallman, and his beloved last dog, Lily.

When Chris was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s ten years ago, He said, “Don’t worry about me, “I’m a warrior”. He has indeed been a warrior, fighting with bravery, valor, strength, and unfailing good humor, never complaining, never asking, “why me?” He never gave up. He continued working, traveling, running, going to the cabin in North Georgia, and going out on his beloved boat. He entered every trial offered to him, knowing there would not be a cure in his lifetime, but information learned from him might help someone else.

He was inclusive. Everyone was always welcome at his home and table. He was the glue that held everyone together. He had long lasting friendships with so many people who loved him and remained steadfast throughout his illness. Even when he lost the ability to speak, they still came just to be with him.

A memorial service will be held when it is safe to gather, an announcement will be made. Donations may be sent to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
