Claire Cope Negley

Claire Cope Negley, age 100, of Decatur, Ga. passed away peacefully at her home on June 19, 2008. She was born in White House, TN, on Oct. 16, 1907 to the late David Crockett and Katie Jones Cope. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marvin Spencer Palmer, who died in 1929 and her second husband of 44 years, Karl Leon Negley, who died in 1977, and brothers Pete, Fred and John and sister Robbie Cope Jackson. She received her R. N. degree from Protestant Hospital, Nashville, TN. and it was there, shortly after graduating, that she met her future husband Karl, while caring for his mother. She continued to nurse many of her family members during their illness throughout her life. She also worked at Emory University Hospital for a short period of time. Claire will be remembered as a kind and caring person of deep faith whose first love was her church, Druid Hills Baptist, where she was a member for sixty-seven years. She was president of her Bible Class for several years and had many wonderful friends. She was an immaculate homemaker whose delight was her family and home. She was an accomplished dressmaker, an active member of her bridge and garden clubs who enjoyed entertaining and traveling. In 1994 she moved to Clairmont Place Senior Living Community in Decatur, Ga. residing there until her death. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Grace Palmer Burkhalter, Ruby Palmer Jones and Robert, Caroline Negley Simerly and Bill, and Gail Negley Wyatt; 20 grandchildren, 29 great grand children and 13 great- great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home with Dr. Ted Moody, Dr. Harold Zwald, and Rev. Charles Tanner officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Druid Hills Baptist Church Mission Fun, 1085 Ponce de Leon Ave., NE, Atlanta, GA 30306 in memory of Claire Negley or the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at A. S. Turner & Sons.
