Clarence Teurman Smith passed away on August 27, 2014, following a long illness. He was born October 6, 1923, the son of William Gurley Smith and Velma Eason Smith in Douglasville, GA. He grew up in Fairburn on the family farm where, as the oldest boy of eight children, he worked very hard from an early age to keep the farm going because his father was disabled. He served our country in the Army Air Corps with the occupation forces on Okinawa Island, Japan at the end WWII. Returning home from the Army, Teurman married the love of his life, Ernestine Morgan Smith, in 1949 and raised four children, Barry Teurman Smith of Loganville, Larry Clarence Smith (Deloris) of McDonough, Timothy Allen Smith (Monica) of Douglasville; and Margina Smith Barrett (Chris) of Loganville. The family lived in what is affectionately called Pea Ridge in DeKalb County. He worked for the Southern Railroad, John Rogers Remanufacturing; later formed his own company Akin and Smith Construction; and ended his career at Allis-Chalmers Forklifts. Above all, he loved the Lord and he loved his family. Following a near fatal car crash that left his oldest son Barry paralyzed, he dedicated his life to taking care of him. When he retired, he liked nothing better than babysitting his grandchildren. He was an active member of Rehoboth Baptist Church until his health failed. In addition to his wife and four children (above), he is survived by his sisters, Frances Fincher, Laura Jo Maddox, Carolyn Lee, Jean Brown; brother, Donald Smith; grandchildren, Joshua Davidson, Jeremy Davidson, Cassie Smith and Nathan Smith; great grandchildren, Emily Smith, Savannah Smith, Rylan Smith. He was predeceased by his brother, Billy Smith and sister, Runell Swann. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or Rehoboth Baptist Church. His funeral services will be held on Saturday August 30th at 11:00 am at Rehoboth Baptist Church Auditorium with interment to follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday August 29 at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
