Claude B. McGuinn of Tucker, GA died August 9, 2011 at the age of 88. He was born August 25, 1922 in Gaffney, SC to James Hoyt and Bertha Jane Hunnicutt McGuinn.
Claude was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the 2nd armored division as a tank sergeant under George Patton and later served in the 1st armored division. He was the recipient of the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Europe and Africa Medal with three battle stars plus four more battle stars. Later, he also served in the Air Force during the Korean War. In the summer of 1946, Claude began his long career of 41 years with AT&T. While working as a lineman for the phone company, he met a beautiful Floridian named Wanda M. Carraway. They married September 3, 1947 and eventually settled in the Atlanta area in 1948. Claude and Wanda raised six sons, Claude B. McGuinn Jr. "Mac", Curtis Barry (Ruth Ann), James Leslie (Billie), Steve Allan, Michael Chris (Pamela), Jeffrey Brett and one daughter Melinda Susan Chapman (Harry). Claude was preceded in death by son Curtis Barry McGuinn and granddaughter Katherine Ann McGuinn. Claude and Wanda have 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Claude was proud of his military service. He remained active with CWA Local 3250 throughout his career at AT&T, serving as President multiple times. He received the Georgia AFL-CIO Lifetime Achievement Award. Claude was also on the Board of Directors at Georgia Telco Credit Union. As a young man, Claude liked to fish. For decades, he enjoyed time with his family at the lake, as an avid boater. He played golf well into his retirement years. Claude remained active in the Senior Golfers Association. He never missed paying his golf dues because, despite declining health, he always looked forward to playing again. Claude will be missed by all who loved him, especially Wanda, his wife of nearly 64 years. Burial at Georgia National Cemetery is to be announced. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Thursday, at A.S. Turner & Sons.
