Cornelia Camp Brillhart

Cornelia Camp Brillhart passed away on Thursday October 10, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 68 years William E. Brillhart; her daughters Elizabeth Brillhart Nuttall and husband, Robert P. Nuttall, Mary Brillhart Bower and husband, David J. Bower; four grandsons, Christopher William Bower, Robert William Nuttall, Jason Andrew Bower and Jeffrey Phillip Nuttall. Connie was born in Dallas, GA on October 24, 1922 to Effie and Virgil Camp. She was raised in the West End area of Atlanta. Connie attended Harris Elementary, Brown Junior High, Commercial High School, and attended Georgia State University. She worked at Ward White Realty Co. in Atlanta. Connie met her husband Bill at the USO in Atlanta while he was stationed at Lawson General Hospital during WWII. After Bill returned from his tour in Europe they were married on June 23, 1946. After Bill finished his graduate work at Emory University they spent time at FSU Marine Lab at Alligator Harbor and then Emory at Valdosta. Connie and Bill returned to Atlanta for Bill to teach at Emory University's Biology Department. Connie stayed home to raise their two daughters until they both entered school and then she began working at Emory as a secretary; first in the Biology Department and later in Geology and Religion. Connie earned her Real Estate License later in life, and spent many enjoyable years working at Karafotias Realty in Decatur. Connie and Bill had the opportunity to travel and attended many Elder-hostels throughout the US and Canada. They owned a modest second home on Saint Simons Island GA and divided their time between Atlanta and SSI. Connie was an activist and worked to stop the Presidential Parkway, save Jekyll Island, create Burbanck Park in Druid Hills, and save Fernbank Science Center. Connie was active in Emory Woman's Club, Emory Employee Council, Emory Presbyterian Church, Saint Simons Land Trust and Friends of Sapelo Island. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons followed by a family burial at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Burbanck Park through Park Pride, Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island or Saint Simons Island Land Trust. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Friday, October 11, 2013 at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
