Cynthia Margaret Palfrey, née Lange, 48, of Decatur, passed away on March 3, 2023, after bravely fighting a taxing battle with cancer.
Cyndi was born on March 8, 1974, in Harvey, Illinois. After she graduated with her bachelor of science at Florida Gulf Coast University in 2000, she went on to attain her MSPH at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2002.
Cyndi was the Senior Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Emory University. She was a very accomplished Certified Safety Professional with over 20 years' experience in the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) field. She provided EHS consulting services to a wide range of industries including government, military, aerospace, academia, mining, and pharmaceutical. Cyndi had extensive experience in occupational safety as a Regional Director for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) where she was responsible for EHS risk management at 480 field locations. During the pandemic, she was one of the EHSO leads for COVID response for the university. Mentorship was important to her, and she felt privileged to mentor many throughout her career.
While she was a very accomplished professional, Cyndi was also an incredibly dedicated mother. Cyndi and Aggie were deeply bonded, sharing a love of the outdoors, nature, dance, yoga, and most of all, laughter. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, camping with her family, and keeping all of us in line.
She was a remarkable, loving woman. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and colleagues.
Celebration of Life for Cyndi Palfrey will be held on Sunday March 12 at Cannon Chapel on the Emory Campus. Doors will open at 1 pm for visiting and the service will commence at 2 pm officiated by Ike Hall. Afterwards there will be opportunity to continue visiting until 4 pm.
