Dan Westbrook Whitmire died peacefully in the arms of his wife on Monday March 13, 2017. He was born on May 15, 1927 in Carnesville, Georgia to William Morris and Dorothy Westbrook Whitmire. His early years were spent on a farm with his family, including two brothers, Morris and Steve, who predeceased him. They learned to farm, hunt and fish and developed an abiding love for the outdoors and animals. When he was eleven, his family moved to the Kirkwood area of Atlanta, where he made many lifelong friends. He graduated from Tech High and the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He proudly served in the United States Navy.
Dan was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan, and in earlier years when it was allowed, he recruited tirelessly for the football team, signing some of Georgia's finest. He rarely missed a game for nearly 70 years. In 1996 he received the Dan McGill Spirit Award, and in 2003 was presented the 'Old Faithful Dawg' Award in Sanford Stadium. He was fiercely devoted to the Wally's Boys Association at UGA, and for decades was an active member of the Atlanta Touchdown Club and the DeKalb County Bulldog Club. He was an active contributor to the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and served for years on the selection committee. He loved fishing and spending time at the cabin on Jackson Lake built by him, his brother Morris and best friend John Dobbs and was an avid golfer. He spent his working years as an auditor with the Continental and Maryland Casualty Insurance Companies.
Most important in his life were his Christian faith and his family. He was a member of Briarlake Baptist Church for 51 years, where he was active until his health declined. He served as deacon for many years, as president of his beloved Sunday School class, on numerous committees and coached youth baseball teams.
He is survived by his family who loved him dearly, including his wife Carolyn; children and grandchildren Dianne, Tommy, Davis and Kelley Orr; Brook, Jennifer, Allie and James Whitmire; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
A service will be held on Saturday, March 18 at Briarlake Baptist Church, Decatur at 11:00, with Rev. Larry Sullivan officiating. The family will receive friends after the service. Memorials may be made to Briarlake Baptist Church or the University of Georgia Capital Campaign.
