Daniel Schoel Harrington was born on August 13, 1922, in Akron, Ohio. He moved to Georgia as a young boy, when his father transferred to Atlanta with the Goodyear Tire Company. The family later moved to Decatur, Ga where he resided on the same property until his death on January 29, 2018. He graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1940. He served in the United States Air Force during WWII. He was in the Jolly Rogers 90th Bomber group where he served as a navigator. Once home from the war, he resumed his studies at The Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned his bachelor’s degree. After graduation, he joined forces with his father, Daniel Stephen Harrington and his brother, Steve, to create the Harrington and Sons Construction company in Decatur, GA. They built over 500 homes in the Decatur area including many Medlock Park and Laurel Ridge neighborhoods.
Dan enjoyed many years of home ownership on Lake Lanier where he and his family would spend weekends boating, fishing and visiting with friends in nearby homes. He also enjoyed daily outings with his brother, Steve, as they lived next door to each other their entire adult lives. Dan loved to have a project. He enjoyed supervising his grandsons as they helped him around his home. They fondly referred to this as “Camp Dan”, which usually included a delicious lunch prepared by his wife, Daisy. His most recent accomplishment was renovating his basement, including adding a bathroom, which he was very proud of and completed a lot of the work himself.
Dan also enjoyed watching sports, especially football. He often lamented the fact that Monday Night football kicked off at his bedtime but enjoyed finding out the score the following morning. He was an avid reader of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution and the Wall Street Journal, as he liked to keep up with current events and the trends of the stock market.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Stephen Harrington, his mother, Louise Schoel Harrington, his brother, Stephen Henry Harrington, and his son, James Joseph (Jimmy) Harrington. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Daisy Joiner Harrington, sons, Daniel Joiner Harrington and John Stephen Harrington, daughter-in-law, Clara Guy Harrington, grandsons, Derek Stephen Harrington (Brittany), Candler Schoel Harrington, and John Daniel Harrington, and granddaughter, Gayle Rene Scott (Will). He had 6 great grandchildren, John and AJ Harrington, and Wendy, Theresa, Joseph and Matthew Scott.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, February 10 at 1 pm at A.S. Turner and sons Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service in the Chapel at 2 PM. A graveside service will be held immediately after at Decatur Cemetery.
