David Franklin Castles, Sr., 92, of Atlanta, died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 30, 2016. Nell, his beloved wife of 64 years, predeceased him in January 2016. He is survived by his five children: Nancy (Ed) Bertram, Anne (Kevin) Shea, David (Karyn) Castles, Jane (Clell) Deaver, and Jennifer Castles, as well as by his sisters, Elsie Castles and Cathryn (John) Black. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Dave served with the 100thBomb Group, US Army Air Corps, in World War II. Shot down on their 13th mission in May 1944, he and his entire crew survived a year as POWs before liberation in 1945. After the war he earned a BSEE from Clemson University and enjoyed a life-long career with IBM. A meticulous craftsman and woodworker, Dave will be remembered especially for the beautiful furniture he made and for the homes he lovingly built and renovated. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, at A.S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, GA. The funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 5, at Greenbrier Methodist Church in Winnsboro, SC (arrangements by Pope Funeral Home, Winnsboro). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Annie S. Castles Scholarship Fund c/o Greenbrier Methodist Church, Winnsboro, SC, or to the Boy Scouts of America.
