David Leon Smotherman of Atlanta, GA passed away on March 31, 2024. He was born and raised in Shelbyville, TN where he met his beloved wife, Shirley. They were married on August 11,1963 and moved to Atlanta shortly thereafter. He worked as Executive Director for the Decatur/Dekalb Housing Authority the majority of his career. He later went on to work as Executive Director for the Housing Agency Retirement Trust (HART) and Georgia Housing Authority Risk Retention Pool (GHARRP).
David enjoyed spending time with his family and was looking forward to the arrival of his first great grandchild, Palmer James. He was famous for his "one-liner" jokes and comments which were delivered with impeccable timing. He loved sports and was an avid supporter of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Grady T. and Louise W. Smotherman. He Is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Ervin Smotherman; his children Charles Smotherman, wife Sharon, and Tim Smotherman, wife Gena; grandchildren, Eric Smotherman, wife Paige, Katie Smotherman, Holden Smotherman, and Madeleine Smotherman.
Visitation Friday, April 5, from 5:00-7:00pm at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel in Shelbyville TN. Funeral service Saturday, April 6, 11:00am at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel with graveside service following at Willow Mount Cemetery in Shelbyville TN. Memorial service Saturday, April 20, 2:00pm at A. S. Turner and Sons funeral home in Decatur GA, with guests being received by the family beginning at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation in memory of David.
