David Merritt Smith

June 21, 1940 — March 31, 2018

David Merritt Smith, beloved father and friend, passed away at the age of 77 on March 31, 2018 after a long and brave battle with illness.

Raised in Columbus and Americus, he attended the University of Georgia, joining the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and graduating in 1963.

He moved to Atlanta, where he married Susan Eve Sheppard, with whom he had two sons, Jay and Judson.

A devoted Bulldog for life, he was also a prominent member of the Republican Party, serving as chairman for the 5th District of DeKalb county. In 1980, he was a Georgia delegate at the Republican National Convention, where he met Ronald Reagan.

In later life, his passion became the service of God, and he was eagerly involved in many activities at the Church of the Apostles. He served as head usher and performed prison ministry for as many years as he was physically able.

He is survived by his brother, Charles Edward Smith Jr., his two sons, and two grandchildren, Tyler and Mia.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Church of the Apostles Prison Ministry Program.
