Deborah Otis Segal

May 4, 1935 — March 15, 2016

Deborah Otis Segal, daughter of Charles and Anna Otis, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Deborah was born on May 4, 1935, raised in Atlanta, Georgia, grew up in Decatur and graduated from Druid Hills High School. She married Berney Stanley Segal in 1958. Berney's career took the family to several cities in the Northeast. In 1979, Deborah was happy to return home when the family moved back to Atlanta, and she soon began working in women's apparel, spending over 20 years with Saks Fifth Avenue. The greatest love of her life was her family, being particularly devoted to her children and four grandchildren. Deborah was passionate about collecting photography, politics, dogs and underdogs, always supporting those who have a tougher time in life. She was an avid reader and was completely engaged in life each and every day. The news of the day never slipped her by, and elicited many strong opinions and concerns. Bantering with Deborah could result in one's argument being upended by an obscure fact she found on page 12 of a New Yorker article. A great meal out with family or friends, in restaurants all over town, was a distinct pleasure, and even at the age of 80 she could tell you whether to go to the hottest new spot in the city, or possibly not. Deborah was always elegant in her dress and demeanor. Her intelligence, wit, generosity and loving spirit will be greatly missed by all. Deborah is survived by her husband Berney, daughter Julia Segal Hill, son Charles Christopher Segal, son-in-law Charles Lee Hill Jr., and granddaughters Anna Elizabeth Hill, Sarah Callahan "Callie" Hill, Grace Andrews Hill and Matilda Smith Segal. The Rite of Committal will be held privately at Decatur Cemetery. Friends are invited to celebrate Deborah's life at the home of Julia and Charles on Saturday, March 19 from 4-6pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4465 Northside Drive NW, Atlanta, GA 30327, or Catholic Charities Atlanta, 2401 Lake Park Drive SE, Smyrna, GA 30080. A.
