KENAGY, Donald Allan

Donald Allan Kenagy, of Atlanta, Georgia, died on Sunday, May 14, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born on November 18, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennyslvania, to William Lloyd Kenagy and Catheryn Hamilton Kenagy. He was a proud Penn State undergraduate alumnus and received his graduate engineering degrees from MIT. Don started his career in Pittsburg, Pennyslvania, and moved to Atlanta in 1972 to manage Thermo Materials, Inc. in Scottdale, Georgia. After raising a large family and leading several businesses, Don retired in 2005 to travel the world and enjoy time with his wife Carol Sleeth and his children and grandchildren. An avid traveler, Don visited fifty-eight countries on six continents and all fifty states in the US. Among numerous worldwide adventures, he and Carol walked the 480-mile Camino de Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain twice, stayed in a bear camp in Alaska, sailed across the Atlantic in a 370-foot sailboat, and visited friends in the Peace Corps in Malawi and Ukraine. With his friends and family, he canoed and camped in the Okefenokee Swamp nearly every year, and explored almost all the flat-water rivers in South Georgia and the Southeastern US. Although a “kid at heart,” he was an intelligent, inquisitive and thoughtful man. He was strong willed, stubborn, practical, adventurous, and showed quiet affection for those he loved. Donald is preceded in death by his parents, William and Catheryn Kenagy, his sister Joyce Heineman, and his sister-in-law Esther Kenagy. He is survived by his wife and partner in adventure for 33 years, Carol Sleeth; children, Marc Dobiecki (Jennifer Murray); Kate Buchanan (Dennis “Buck”); Justin Kenagy (Bernadette); Jason Kenagy (Renee); Dougal Kenagy (Mignon); grandchildren Isabelle, Delia, Chiara, Kayleigh, Kendall, and Luke; brother Neil; and brother-in-law William Heineman. A celebration of Donald’s life will be held at a later date. Buen Camino, Donaldo. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Penn Ridge Cemetery Association, c/o Nancy Roberts, 3404 S. Texas Road, Trivoli, IL 61569.
