Donald E. Brown, 73, passed away on October 9, 2024, in Tucker, GA.
Don, as he was known by his friends and family, was born on March 11, 1951 in Columbia, SC, to John Brown and Betty Faye (Barham) Brown.
Don finished at Tucker High School and shortly thereafter married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Brown, in 1970. The couple had 2 children, Kelly Wingo, of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Kristie Roe, of Norcross, GA.
Soon after high school Don began a career in real estate. Always wishing he had earned a college degree, Don went back to school in mid-life, earning a Bachelor's degree in Finance and Real Estate from Georgia State University in 2000 at the age of 49. Truly a Renaissance man, Don began work in law enforcement as a volunteer civilian, and liked it so much he eventually graduated from the police academy and worked with the Dekalb County Sheriff's Department, where he retired in 2021 as a Captain. In his retirement, and up until the moment of his untimely passing, he provided security for the Shearith Israel Synagogue, where he was embraced by the community and developed a deep admiration for the Jewish people, learning much about their faith and customs.
Don was best known for his quick wit; his many interests like fishing, hunting, tennis, and golf; and spending time with his kids and grandkids.
Don is survived by his wife, Elaine Brown, of Tucker; daughters Kelly (Jonathan) Wingo of Tuscaloosa, AL and Kristie Roe of Norcross, GA; grandchildren Leyton Roe, Maya Wingo, Emerson Roe, and Coleman Roe; siblings Tom Brown, Janet Trask Trela, and John Brown; a host of extended family, mostly residing in McDonough, GA; and his beloved German Shorthaired Pointer, Sally.
The service for Captain Brown will be held on Sunday, October 13 at 2:30 PM, with visitation beforehand from 12-2:30, all held at A. S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, GA.
In lieu of flowers, one-time gifts can be made in Don's name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
