Donald Cuthbert Locke, 80, of Atlanta, Georgia passed away on Monday, December 6, 2010 peacefully at his home with his wife and children around him. Donald was born in Guyana, South America in 1930, he later went on to study art in London and Edinburgh. During the 1970s, he lived and worked in London. In 1979 Locke was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and he became artist in residence at Arizona State University. He lived with his wife Brenda in Arizona until 1990 when they moved to Georgia, making Atlanta their home. Locke has received international acclaim for his extensive body of work, exhibiting in biennials and solo shows including Sao Paulo, Brazil; Medellin, Colombia; Cuenca, Ecuador; Budapest, Hungary; Faenza, Italy; V&A Museum, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Hayward Gallery, London, UK; Nottingham, UK; Aljira Art Gallery, Newark, NJ; Biennial Atlanta, GA; Master Artist Series, Atlanta, GA; Studio Museum of Harlem, NY. His gallery shows include Nexus, City Gallery East, Solomon Projects, Atlanta, GA; Tucson Museum of Art, AZ. He is represented by Skoto Gallery in NY and the Stella Jones Art Gallery in New Orleans. His last two years have been incredibly productive, with solo shows in the UK and the US, the production of a new body of works in ceramics, publication of a monograph of Five Decades of mixed media sculptures, and the celebration of his 80th birthday. His extraordinary charisma, passion and generosity touched many people and he will be greatly missed. Donald Locke is survived by his wife of 30 years Brenda Locke, his children, Hew, Jonathan and Corinne, their spouses Indra Khanna, Brenda Locke, and Nigel Rogers, his brother and sister-in-law Aubrey and Joy Locke, his in-laws Ken and Rosemary Marsh, his grandchildren, Brandi, Sarah, Justin, Dakara & Issano and his nieces and nephews Faith, Graham, Abigail, Adeyola, Ayodele, Aleke, Mali, Cressida and Lucy. Services for Donald Locke will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 11:00am at the Cannon Chapel at Emory University, 515 Kilgo Circle, N.E.
