Donald Robert Middour, 90, passed peacefully on January 24, 2019 in Decatur, GA. Don was born in Atlanta, GA, on February 16, 1928, to Robert Charles Middour and Edna Hatfield Middour. Don was proudly raised in the Kirkwood neighborhood on Rocky Ford Road, and spent all of his life in the Atlanta area. After graduating from Boys High School in Atlanta, GA, in 1946, he studied mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. When he graduated in 1950, it was not just with a bachelor’s degree, but also with a deep and lifelong commitment as a Tech fan. While in college, he also trained in Pensacola, Fla., as a pilot in the U.S. Navy, leading to his long-lasting interest in flying. He was a member of First Christian Church of Decatur where he and his beloved Carolyn were the first couple to be married there. They spent an amazing 62 years together in marriage, and his eyes would light up with sparks each time she entered the room. His professional life involved careers at the Woodman Company in Decatur, and later in life, Agnes Scott College (the alma mater of Carolyn… whom he took on their first date to a poetry reading by Robert Frost, himself). He was a devoted father and Little League baseball coach to his two sons, Steve and David, and he brought the same loving devotion to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Throughout his life, he remained a humble and very grateful man. Don volunteered in school activities, was an avid sailor and tennis player, and everywhere he went, he was known for his warm, infectious smile and easy-going personality—he was universally known as “a good guy who was fun to be around.” Don was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Edna Middour, the love of his life, Carolyn Woods Middour, and his sister Delores Newton.Don is survived by his sons: David (Christine) Middour of Avondale Estates, GA; Steve (Elizabeth) Middour of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his grandchildren: Owen (Lauren) Middour, Thomas (Emily) Middour, William Middour, Ben Middour, Ava Middour; his step-grandchildren: William Galvin and Miles Galvin; his great-grandchildren: Madeline Middour, Abigail Middour, John Owen Middour, Jr., Garland Grace Middour; and his brother Robert Middour, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Don’s memory to the First Christian Church of Decatur. Give at https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/4142
