Donald W. Ziegler

On May 28, 2007 Donald Weesner Ziegler, age 87, died at the VistaCare Hospice in Atlanta. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Virginia Brannam Ziegler. He is survived by his wife, Eloise Lovelace White, whom he married in 1986. He also is survived by his daughter, Susan Ziegler Prokupek; son, Reed and daughter-in-law Christina; four grandchildren, Steven, David, Jason, and Courtney; and sister, Mary Alice Merritt. Additional survivors include his step-son, Thomas White and his wife Karen; step-daughter, Paulette White Cagle and her husband, Earl; and their seven children. He grew up in Ashland, Nebraska and attended the University of Nebraska. After World War II, where he served in the Navy, he received his PhD in medical science from the University of Pennsylvania. While employed by the Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Co., he was a member of the research team that developed two medically important antibiotics, Erythromycin and Vancomycin. In 1961, he accepted a position with the Centers for Disease Control in the Virology Division where he remained until retirement. While at CDC his research activities includes work with Smallpox, Influenza and HIV viruses. He was an active member of the Atlanta Rose Society. Services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2nd with the Reverend William Deneke officiating. A private interment will be held at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to a hospice of your choice would be appreciated. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at A. S. Turner & Sons
