Doris H. Benson Hand left her Earthly body June 21, 2023. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 6, 1944, to Sam and Minnie Hand, Doris was raised in the Central Park community and graduated West End High School in 1962. She married Sam Benson and after living in Birmingham, they moved to Decatur, GA, where she worked for the Social Security Administration and later at Dekalb Medical Center from which she retired. Doris was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Nancy, and her husband, Sam Benson. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Gallagher (Cary) and her sisters-in-law, Gay Benson Jones and Carol Benson Conley, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Dot will be remembered by all as a genuinely fun and funny lady, humor was one of her many gifts. She would plan her day around University of Alabama football games and church. Her stories about growing up in Alabama and spending time on her grandmother's farm, often confused and terrified her Atlanta born daughter. It's going to take a small army of helpers to get all of her Christmas decorations out in her absence, giving to others truly brought her joy. Until we are reunited, she will keep busy in heaven singing her favorite Elvis gospel hymns, occasionally talking during church, petting all the dogs, telling it like it is with love, and spending time with her husband, whom she never got over missing. Truly one of a kind. Gone but never forgotten.
Services will be held at a later date.
