Doris was born February 18, 1925, in Thomasville, NC, to the late James C. and Icie C. Lykins. She was a longtime resident in Decatur, GA and over the last eleven years, Stone Mountain, GA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Essley B. Burdine, Sr., daughter Carol Ann Burdine and brother Jack W. Lykins. During World War II, Doris served at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station and U.S. Maritime Commission in New Orleans, LA. She was an active volunteer at the VA Hospital in Decatur, GA, and she served in numerous local, state and national positions with the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary where she was a Charter Life Member. Doris was the National Present from 1972-1973. One of the greatest experiences of her career was when she was invited to Normandy to speak at the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. Doris was a member of First United Methodist Church in Decatur, GA and a member of the Eastern Star. She worked as office manager in her husband's law firms Budine and Freeman in Atlanta, GA and then Burdine and Brown in Decatur, GA. She was also the Owner and President of Burdine's of Atlanta, a Gift and Beauty Salon located on West Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA.
