Doris Ruth Armstrong Ortlip, 94, of Atlanta, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away in her sleep Friday, January 11, 2019, of natural causes, having faithfully completed a life of service to God, family, and community. Born in Bradford, PA, March 23, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Chauncey Irwin and Ruth Baxter Armstrong. Doris was a graduate of Houghton College in New York, where she met music student Stephen Ortlip. Their engagement spanned Stephen’s deployment to the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II. They married on January 22, 1946 and modeled nuptial devotion for over 72 years. Alongside her husband, Doris served in education and music at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, Decatur Presbyterian Church, and the Atlanta Young Singers of Callanwolde. The couple traveled together extensively through their involvement in domestic and international choral events. They shared a deep faith in God, praying together daily and immersing themselves in scripture and hymns. Doris was humble, kind, and empathetic. She enjoyed her church community, numerous crafts and hobbies, and attending Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performances with her husband.
Doris is survived by her three children, Stephanie Ortlip Beasley and her husband, Ernest, of Atlanta, Pamela Ortlip Tiemeyer and her husband, Keith, of Danville, KY, and Benjamin Baxter Ortlip and his wife, Lisa, of Alpharetta, GA; fourteen grandchildren: Ernest William Beasley, IV, Sarah Katherine Beasley Mount, Stephen Armstrong Beasley, Bonnie Tiemeyer Klein, Nicholas Tiemeyer, Madeline Tiemeyer, Ellen Ortlip, Kathryn Ortlip, Jane Ortlip, Karsten Ortlip, Rachel Ortlip, Adam Ortlip, Stefan Ortlip, and Aaron Ortlip; three great grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Beasley, Virginia Ruth Beasley, and Josie Mae Tiemeyer; and many more loving family and friends.
