Dorothy Beam Caras, 81, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018 after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Mrs. Caras was born in Nettleton, Mississippi on July 19, 1936, and moved to Griffin, Georgia as a small child. She graduated from Griffin High School, and later attended Georgia State University in Atlanta.
She was a long-time member of the Greek Orthodox Church, and was active in the Philoptochos Society and the Evrytanian Association. She was a regular volunteer for the Atlanta Greek Festival.
She enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking, volunteering, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Dorothy was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her passion in life was taking care of her family and others. Her love and kindness will be missed by many people.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Gus Caras.
Dorothy is survived by three children: her son John Caras and his wife Deborah of Dunwoody, GA; her daughter Vicki Myers and her husband Tim of San Antonio, TX; and her daughter Lisa Taylor and her husband Kevin of Greenville, SC; six grandchildren: Constantine (Charles) Caras, Maria Caras, Nicholas Bitzis, Benjamin Taylor, Lily Taylor, and Cate Taylor; sisters Lydell Pendley of Woodstock, GA, and Merlene Pitts of Lindale, GA.; many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2500 Clairmont Road, N.E.; Atlanta, GA 30329.
Funeral services will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Atlanta at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 28, 2018. Interment will take place immediately following the service at Greenwood Cemetery, 1173 Cascade Circle, SW; Atlanta, GA. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 27, 2018 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, with prayer service at 7:00 pm, at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033.
