Dorothy Bruce Murphy died on November 6, 2011 from complications of Lewy Body Dementia after several years of declining health. A resident of the Fountainview Center, she was attended by her loving and devoted family, nursing staff and Crossroads Hospice nurses. Prior to her stay at Fountainview Mrs. Murphy resided at King'sBridge Retirement Center and her many caregivers there are remembered with gratitude. Mrs. Murphy was born on August 6, 1923 in Greensboro, GA to the late Nellie and Alva Bruce. She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, S. Fred Murphy, Jr. and her brother Nelson Bruce. Mrs. Murphy graduated from Greensboro High School in 1941, attended Valdosta State College and graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1946. She was an enthusiastic schoolteacher and began her career in Jackson, Ga. She then moved to Thomaston, GA where she met her future husband. After their marriage in Greensboro they moved to Atlanta where Mrs. Murphy taught at E. Rivers Elementary School for several years. Longtime resident of the Echo Lake community, Mrs. Murphy was active in the Echo Lake Garden Club and the LaVista Women's Club. After years as a homemaker she returned to work at Emory Hospital as an outpatient account representative and retired at age 77. She cherished her Emory friendships and her work. Mrs. Murphy is survived by her son, Emory physician Frederick B. Murphy, M.D. and his wife Cheryl. She took great pride in her grandchildren Susie Murphy Reynolds (David) and H. David Murphy. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Walter Y. Murphy (Marianne), nieces Clare Tripp and Julie Fore, and her cousin Barbara Moncrief. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 12, at 1pm, at St. Bede's Episcopal Church, The Rev. Janice Chalaron officiating. Funeral arrangements are by AS Turner & Sons. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047.
