Dorothy Janis Worth

Dorothy Janis Williamson Worth, of Decatur, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 23, 2010. Born in Centralhatchee, Georgia, Dorothy received a B.A. degree with Highest Honors from West Georgia College in 1967 and an M.A. degree from Georgia State University in 1975. Early in her career, she was a newspaper reporter and a legal secretary; later she taught Spanish, French and English at Oak Mountain Academy and DeKalb College, and was an instructor at Georgia State University until her retirement in 1997. Writing poetry since the age of ten, she won numerous national, regional and local awards for poetry; including the 1996 Dickson Award of the Georgia Poetry Society for her chapbook Desert Places. She was widely published in magazines, journals, anthologies and collections. She frequently taught at writers conferences and workshops, and edited several volumes of poetry and literary newsletters. She was actively involved in many writing organizations, including the Georgia Poetry Society, the Village Writers Group, the Atlanta Writers Club, and the Southeastern Writers Association. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gene Worth; her sister, Barbara Bagwell; her son, John Worth, and his wife Concha; and her two grandsons, Christopher and Henry Worth. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Louis Miller officiating.
