Dorothy Lowe (O'Dillon) Sayer, formally of Watkinsville and Decatur GA, went to her heavenly home on July 7th, 2016.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Sayer Jr. and her parents, Thomas Lowe O'Dillon and Sarah Elizabeth (Downs) O'Dillon, 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
She left behind her son, Edward M. Sayer III and his wife, Kelly Kimball Sayer, 3 nephews, 1 niece and their children.
Dorothy graduated from Oconee Co. High School in Watkinsville GA in 1943. Then graduated from Young Harris College, Young Harris GA in 1945.
She retired from the GA Dept. of Labor on Disability from a little known disease called Scleroderma. She made it her life's work to promote awareness of this disease. With her Rheumatologist, Dr. Gary Botstein, they co-founded the Scleroderma Georgia Link, a support group for others diagnosed with this disease and their families. As a director of this group, she created fundraisers for research, public awareness and comfort for the other members.
She was also active in church activities at Emory Baptist Church and Decatur First Baptist Church. WMU, Young at Heart and associate Sunday school teacher to name a few. She was active in the Young Harris Alumni Foundation, the GA Homemakers Council, the Ms. Senior GA. Pageant (to promote the positive image of aging), the Decatur Lions Club and the Lighthouse Foundation, the Medlock Heights Garden Club and early on was a State Commander for the Disabled Americans Veteran Auxiliary. She was always looking for ways to help others.
She was a contributing writer of a column for several years, titled "Jes Pondering" for the GA Senior News.
Family Visitation will be at A. S. Turner Funeral Home, Decatur GA on Monday evening, July 11th from 6pm – 8pm. Funeral services will be held at Decatur First Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 12th at 11 am. A Graveside service will be at 3 pm at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, GA.
