Dot Thatcher, age 87, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012. The family will receive visitors at A.S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur on Friday, January 4, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Briarcliff Baptist Church, followed by burial at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs.
Dot was born September 26, 1925, in Wildwood, Georgia and grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She graduated from Red Bank High School, where she graduated as salutarian, and earned her Bachelor's Degree, cum laude, from the University of Chattanooga. After earning her degree, she began her career as a school teacher and taught school in the City of Chattanooga for 20 years, and then taught in Fairfax County, Virginia, and DeKalb County, Georgia. Dot, and her loving husband of almost 50 years, Paul, were members of Briarcliff Baptist Church since moving to Atlanta in 1965. Dot was a member of the Terrie Rogers Sunday School Class and actively sang in the choir. She also was an active member of the Briarpatch Garden Club for most of her time in Atlanta. Dot is survived by her husband, Paul Selcer Thatcher, her sister, Clara Wofford (Leslie) of Birmingham, Alabama, her son, David Paul Thatcher (Kauleen), and her two grandsons Charles Bentley Thatcher and William Coulter Thatcher. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Georgia, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, Georgia 30346 or Briarcliff Baptist Church, 3039 Briarcliff Road, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30329.
