Dorothy May Churchwell

January 21, 1930 — February 14, 2017

Dorothy Armstrong Churchwell passed away on February 14, 2017. She took a piece of our hearts with her.

Dot was born in Hohenwald, Tennessee, on January 21, 1930. After high school, she left Hohenwald to go to business school in Columbia, Tennessee. From there it was on to Nashville, where she lived at the Girls' Home of the Central Church of Christ. Her first job in Nashville was with Boone Contracting, but she soon began her career in banking at Commerce Union. Dot and her two children moved to Decatur, Georgia, in 1966. She began working with The First National Bank of Atlanta, which eventually became Wachovia Bank, and retired from there in 1996.

Her life was defined by her love of God and her devotion to her family. She was a faithful Christian and a treasured member of the Northlake Church of Christ family. Dot was a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her own family, but was also a surrogate mom and grandmother to many others.

She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Armstrong, and mother, Maggie Harris, along with her younger brothers Sammie Armstrong and James Armstrong. She is survived by her son, Michael Churchwell (Ronda) of Cartersville, and her daughter, Sabrina Macdonald (Hugh) of Roswell, brother Lee Armstrong (Anne) of Nashville, sisters-in-law Shirley Armstrong of Nashville, and Carolyn Armstrong of Hohenwald, as well as her precious grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephew. Finis Herron, her dear friend, was a great companion and source of happiness for her.

Dot was a very strong woman, yet very tender-hearted. She shared many hours and days as a volunteer, especially once she retired, working as a greeter for Fernbank Museum, delivering Meals on Wheels, visiting shut-ins, vacation Bible school, Hands On Atlanta, Trees Atlanta, Atlanta Ballet, Predisan, and Georgia AGAPE. She also had a sense of adventure, loved to travel the world, and was always ready to go.
