Dorothy (Dottie) Jean Eastman Medlock, 84 years old, died Tuesday, August 02, 2011, at home surrounded by family. She was married to Thomas Wesley Medlock for over 64 years. She was born to Eleanor Norris Eastman, of Rochester, NY, and Wilson Hume Eastman, of Atlanta, on April 3, 1927. During her adult life, she also had a wonderful stepfather, Earl C. Stonell . During her childhood, she grew up in Rochester, NY, Chicago, IL, and Buffalo, NY. As a teenager, she participated in many local speed skating competitions. She graduated from John Marshall High School in Rochester, NY, and moved to Atlanta with her parents, where she met her future husband, while both were attending Georgia State Evening College, now known as, Georgia State University. They later married on December 21, 1946, at St. Anthony of Padua, Atlanta. They have two daughters, Dianne Medlock Joy and Tommie Lynn Medlock Nichols, who both reside with their families in DeKalb County. She is predeceased by her precious grandson, David (Frank David Nichols, III). She is survived by sons-in-law Frank Nichols., and Bill Joy, grandchildren Ted Joy and wife, Stephanie Joy, Caroline Nichols and husband, Ethan James and Catherine Joy. She has 8 great grandchildren, Elisabeth, Mackenzie, Madison, Charlotte,, Henry, Thomas and twins, William and Alex. She is also survived by her brother, Wilson Hume Eastman and sister-in-law, Marion Zoref Eastman, Laurel, Maryland, and nephews, Mike, Bobby and Larry and their families.Dottie was a homemaker and was an excellent seamstress. She was a charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She participated in the church bowling league and played in several bridge clubs. She always enjoyed having her daughters' friends over, especially during the high school years and was a constant volunteer at W.D. Thomson Elementary School and Briarcliff High School. She was also a Girls Scout leader and, she worked at the polls during local and national elections.They traveled extensively to many different places in the world with family and friends. Her favorite place, though, was their second home, "The Cottage," at Inlet Beach on the Florida Panhandle.She was a wonderful grandparent, attending whatever events her grandchildren participated in. She was involved in all aspects of their lives and added a special richness to their interests and memories. She raised a wonderful family and was an important influence in the lives of her daughters and their husbands, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.
The family would also like to thank Barbara Campbell, her wonderful caretaker, and Elaine and the staff of Hospice Atlanta.There will be visitation at A.S. Turner on Friday, August 5, 6- 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Saturday, August 6 at 1 p.m. Father Joshua T. Allen will officiate and burial will be at Arlington Memorial Cemetery, following the Mass.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Frank David Nichols, III, Scholarship Award through The Georgia Tech Foundation.
