Dorothy Miller Fowler

April 6, 1916 — June 18, 2009

Dorothy Miller Fowler passed away peacefully on Thursday night, June 18.  2009. Dorothy was born on April 6, 1916, and was the daughter of Charles Cecil Miller and Mary Fox Miller of Columbus, OH.  She graduated from Saint Mary of the Springs Academy in Columbus. Dorothy met her devoted husband of 58 years, Tom Fowler, in Daytona Beach, FL, while Tom was in the Marines.  They married and moved back to Tom’s home in Atlanta in 1946 where Tom completed his studies at Georgia Tech.  Dorothy was known for her positive attitude and joy of life throughout her 93 years.  She was a talented homemaker and an accomplished seamstress.  She loved many crafts including knitting, smocking, porcelain doll-making and basket weaving.  Known by many as Dot, she was an active volunteer for many years and delighted in teaching many of her crafts to others.  She also loved the game of bridge and played the game weekly with the same group of friends for over 40 years. Following Tom’s retirement they made their winter home in St. Petersburg, FL.  Dorothy’s love of Florida and her special times there with Tom and family members were among her greatest joys in life. Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Barbara Miller of Yucca Valley, CA, Martha Malloy of Hoschton, GA, Mary Sue Lindsey and husband Phil of Dadeville, AL, and Merrimeth F. Oliver of Atlanta and son, Tom Fowler and wife Paula of Dunwoody; grandchildren Michael Malloy of Atlanta, Kathy Hollis of Buford, Shannon Brandt (Chris) of Auburn, AL, Michael Lindsey (Tyanne) of Houston, TX, Brad Duke of Tampa, FL, Megan Freeman (Stephen) of Longmont, CO, Thomas Fowler and Katie Fowler of Atlanta, Doug Thompkins and Dean Martin of San Jose, CA, and Debra Thompkins of Yucca Valley, CA; plus fourteen great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Monday, June 22nd, at 11:00 AM.  A reception in the church parlor will follow.   The family will also receive visitors from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Sunday evening, June 21st, at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home located at 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dorothy’s memory to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Road, Decatur, GA 30033.
