Dorothy Simmons Adams (aka "Dot" and "MaMu") passed away peacefully at her home on October 14, 2016. Dorothy was born in Atlanta, GA but spent much of her childhood in Thomasville, GA at a boarding school prior to the Great Depression. Dorothy had one younger brother, Thomas Simmons (deceased 1988). In the late 1930s, she attended nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, which used to have a boarding school off Courtland Street to train Registered Nurses. After becoming a RN, she worked for St. Joseph's hospital as a nurse. Dorothy married Robert Adams, Jr. (deceased 1980) in 1940.
During WWII, she and her husband lived in several different cities as her husband's military assignments changed. As with many people of the "Greatest Generation," living through the Great Depression and WWII helped to shape her life. She used to tell stories about having to drive to St. Joseph's hospital at night without her lights on during black-out bombing drills in Atlanta – there were concerns of the Nazis eventually bombing different East Coast cities before the end of WWII, and these drills were to practice for such an event.
After WWII, Dorothy and her husband settled in Decatur, GA to raise their two children, Darci Lynn Adams and Robert Adams, III (deceased 1991). Dorothy and her husband Robert were very involved in their community and enjoyed many life-long friendships. Following the death of her son, she became an outspoken advocate of AIDS research and awareness in Atlanta. She was also an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur.
Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, and friend to many. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Darci Lynn Adams; grandchildren, Gil Warren (spouse Meredith) and Hannah (Warren) Wagner (spouse Drue); great-grandchildren, Robert Warren, Kathryn Warren, and Caroline Warren; nephew, Robert Simmons (spouse Eileen) and several great-nephews and great-nieces from her brother's side of the family.
